The Fantastic Four from Origin to Film (Podcast Episode Research)

The concept of the Fantastic Four characters was introduced to the world in August of 1961 by collaborators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the comic entitled simply, “The Fantastic Four #1” and cover dated for November 1961.

The prompt for the creation of the Fantastic Four team was in an effort to find a superhero group to offer some competition for attention from the DC comic’s popular team Justice League of America.

They were the first superheroes that didn’t have secret identities to protect and were openly in the public eye.

(Interestingly, the comic released just 3 months after Alan Shepherd became famous for being the first American to go into space.)

The heroic team transitioned from comic books to a Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon series for the first time in 1967. Between the years of 1967 and 2006 there were five animated series dedicated to the Fantastic Four team, and of course they have appeared at times in other Marvel character storylines.

The first Fantastic Four movie was filmed in 1994 by Roger Corman. The movie was filmed with very basic special effects on a limited budget and in a small time frame.

The actors had to wear their own clothing for most of the film, other than the blue and white Fantastic Four costumes.

Despite that, the acting cast was actually rather notable and featuring Alex Hyde-White (as Reed Richardson “Mr. Fantastic”), Rebecca Staab (as Sue Storm), Jay Underwood (as Johnny Storm the “Human Torch”), and Michael Bailey Smith (as the human appearance of Ben Grimm “the Thing”).

Apparently, the costume for the Thing had already been created and sized for a stuntman so it would not fit on Michael Smith. Sadly, this movie was never officially released.

According to our research the rights to the movie had been purchased but had a time limit, so in order to keep them the film had to be made. Some bootleg copies of the movie were available over the years, but we were unable to find an accessible copy to watch.

There is a documentary called “Doomed” about the backstory that can be found on YouTube. But also, we found out that those four original actors were honored by being given small roles in the newest version of the film made in 2025.

Prior to the 2025 film, it was the Fantastic Four film of 2005 that was most well known. That movie starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis, all of whom reprised their roles in the 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

It is an interesting contrast how the sets, clothing and props of those two films seem so modern for the actual time of the filming compared to the retro appearance of the set, props, clothing, and personal styles of the actors in the latest movie filmed in 2025.

Another difference between those earlier films and the latest is that Silver Surfer was changed from male to female.

It goes without saying there has been a variety of adversaries for the Fantastic Four to face off against over the years. Their most well-known adversaries included: Dr. Doom, Galactus (a cosmic entity that destroys and absorbs worlds), Annihilus (an enemy from the Negative Zone), and the underground dwelling Mole Man.

Some other enemies included Diablo, Wizard, Puppet Master, Red Ghost, Psycho-Man, and Super Skrull.
